Alaine’s Story: “I’m privileged to see first hand the care and support Weldmar provides”

30th July 2021

Fundraising News Team Weldmar

Alaine Harman is part of the Fundraising Team at Weldmar Hospicecare, and offers help and advice to those people who organise their own fundraising events or challenges to raise money for the charity.

Now, she’s taking on her own fundraising adventure by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats this August.

“I’m privileged to be part of the team at Weldmar,” says Alaine, “and privileged to see the love, care, and support they give to patients and families.  Our nurses, doctors, and therapists really do change people’s lives, and it’s something I’m very passionate about – it’s certainly more than just a job.”

Alaine says she feels she’s doing her bit when fundraising has been tough.  “Normally at this time of year we’d be doing our Great Dorset Cycle Challenge.  With this, and many more of our own events still not running, it was a good opportunity to step up and raise money for Weldmar.”

It was at the start of the pandemic that Alaine, and her husband Mark, stepped up the time they spent out on their bikes, and enjoyed it so much they joined the Ridgeway Riders, who have helped with training.

Alaine, Mark, and their friend Mags will be taking on the challenge from 9th August, and will cycle an average of 73 miles per day for fourteen days, but it’s not something Alaine thought she would ever do.  “I was asked if cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats was on my bucket list, and I said absolutely not!  But when I mentioned it to my husband, he said he’d fancy it, and so I came around to the idea.  Both Mags and I have just turned sixty, so we were looking to do something to mark that.  This seemed the perfect opportunity, and also to do something to support Weldmar”.
