Apprenticeships have often been thought as a career option only for school leavers, but that is just a myth. Apprenticeships are also great for employees in various stages of their career journey. At Weldmar we promote apprenticeships as we think it is extremely important to allow our employees to develop and grow, gaining new skills and experience which in turn helps us to not only provide the high standard of end of life care to patients with a life limiting illness and support for their loved ones, but also a high standard of service across all areas of the charity. We have employees currently studying and recently completing apprenticeships in various areas including health and social care, accountancy, retail, and hospitality from level 2 all the way up to level 7 – the equivalent of a masters degree!
Meet an apprentice – Sophie Perrin
Sophie is an Assistant Practitioner within our Weldmar Community Nurses team. She is currently completing her Level 5 in Adult Care through Swatpro. She said “I am very grateful to be given the opportunity at Weldmar to complete my Level 5 in Adult Care whilst being able to continue to fulfill my role. I was apprehensive about studying again because of the daunting thought of still working full time and being a mum to two young children is busy enough, however I know that from doing this it will give me the support and knowledge to progress further in my career now and later on in life and hopefully open many doors to opportunities.”
Sophie is really enjoying the course, “I have the great support from my colleagues who also have endless amounts of knowledge which is very useful. I’m never short of anyone to ask. Having the support from everyone you work with is the most important thing to get you through and you never feel on you own. So a huge appreciation to them!”
Sophie has also had a great level support from her training provider, “Swatpro who I’m doing the course with have also been fantastic, I needed to take a short break from studying for personal reasons and they were able to put this on pause for me and I’m now back up and running again with the support from my tutor.”
“My advice to anyone is thinking about studying again is GO FOR IT especially if you have support around you like I do at Weldmar Hospicecare.”
