It was a sunny evening in August when hundred of people flocked to Weymouth and Portland Rugby Club for a special quiz night in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare, which raised a brilliant £2,760.

The event was organised in memory of Elaine Stockley, who passed away at our Inpatient Unit in June, having been a regular at Weldmar’s Day Services for some time.

Pictured above from left to right are Elaine’s daughter, Helen, and friends and work colleagues Susan, Gina, and Tanya, with Clare from Weldmar’s fundraising team.

Elaine enjoyed Day Services – particularly the visits from the Hogsback Chapter, who took patients out for a spin on their bikes!

Susan told us, “My husband, Carl, runs quiz nights in Weymouth and I asked him if he would help me and Tanya to raise some sponsorship for our Jurassic Coast Challenge by doing an online quiz. That idea soon developed into running a quiz night at Weymouth & Portland Rugby Club, and making it as big as we could. It was an amazing evening, and the support we got from the rugby club, from everyone who attended, and those who donated raffle prizes, was fantastic.”

“We all worked nights together at Maiden Castle House, she was a wonderful carer who loved her job. She was absolutely devastated when she had to leave due to ill health because it was part of her life. Elaine was amazing, a real inspiration to us all. She went through five and a half years of cancer and never complained, and did everything she could to make every day count. Even through Covid, we had group chats and were messaging daily, she made sure of that. She was an amazing lady and we’ll always miss her, and we wanted to say thank you to Weldmar for everything they did for her.”

Helen said that what Elaine’s friends did to raise money was phenomenal.

Our thanks to Helen, Susan and Carl, Gina, Tanya, and Elaine’s son Paul for all their efforts in organising the quiz night in Elaine’s memory. We’d love to know what you are doing to support Weldmar. You can share your story by emailing james.oneill@weld-hospice.org.uk or add your fundraising event to our online events list.
