King Charles III confirmed as Patron for Weldmar Hospicecare

Weldmar Hospicecare have confirmed that following a communication from Buckingham Palace, His Majesty King Charles III is retaining his Patronage towards the Dorset charity, a position which he has held since 1994.

The King first became involved with Weldmar in 1992, when an appeal was launched to build a hospice in Dorchester, on a site formerly a Duchy owned farm. He had a keen interest in the build and the charity’s services, providing access to his personal architect throughout the process.

On 19^th May 1992, the former HRH The Prince of Wales visited the future site of the hospice, inspecting some of the early work and drawings, before attending our first AGM.

It was in April 1994 when he officially became our Patron.

Matt Smith, Chief Operating Officer for Weldmar Hospicecare said “Across the three decades, The King has visited on many occasions and remained updated on the work of Weldmar Hospicecare. We feel exceptionally privileged that at a time when he has taken on many additional duties and Patronages, that he has chosen to continue as Patron of Weldmar Hospicecare. We are extremely grateful”.

The news of Weldmar’s Patron, which coincides with the first anniversary of Their Majesties’ Coronation, also comes at a time when Weldmar Hospicecare is planning a one million pounds deficit this year.

On 19^th May, across 30 hours, Weldmar are holding a campaign called “Making Every Moment Matter” where each donation received will be doubled, with an ambitious fundraising target of £250,000.

Matt said “Demand for our services is increasing, whilst raising enough money to fund this vital care is becoming more challenging. We are marking three decades of care this year, and feel exceptionally privileged to have had the continued support of The King during this time, demonstrating his recognition of our vital work across the county. We hope to continue making every moment matter for our local community, both now and in the future, and appreciate all the support we receive, from our Royal Patron and all the way through to our loyal supporters. We simply couldn’t continue without such support”
