< BACK TO NEWSWeldmar Hospicecare is fortunate to have fantastic support from the local community, who donate, fundraise and shop with us to help ensure we can continue to provide specialist end of life care to local adults who have a life limiting illness, and support for their loved ones.
It’s also very special when our own team members take on their own challenges to raise funds, on top of the brilliant contribution they already make towards this care.
Lucinda Grice is a Senior Staff Nurse at our Inpatient Unit in Dorchester, and has just completed a Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride.
“It was brilliant, but tough. We went through some very hilly areas, and I’m really proud that I didn’t get off and push once, I carried on riding! The worst part of it was not the actual cycling, but almost getting taken out by a lorry which overtook us, and moved back in about six inches from my front wheel. It made my hair stand on end a bit! The best part was the fact I didn’t know anyone who was in the party at the start of it, but all going away as friends.”
Lucinda’s caring nature came through as she became a buddy to a member of her party who was deaf and had poor eyesight, and was able to help him by sticking near him throughout the ride.
Colleagues at the hospice, who had been following her progress every day on a map in the Nurses’ Station, presented Lucinda with flowers and cake on her return, and Dr Paul Barker called her a ‘super hero’, and said it was ‘an extraordinary achievement’.
At the time of writing, Lucinda has raised in excess of £1,000 for Weldmar Hospicecare on her fundraising page.
Well done Lucinda!
