Our fundraising heroes of 2020

26th December 2020

2020 has been a year like no other, and the fundraising efforts of the local community to support Weldmar Hospicecare has also been unprecedented.

With our calendar of fundraising events cancelled from March onwards, and shops closed for a number of months, we were reliant more than ever on supporters coming up with their own challenges and initiatives to help raise funds.

Our Moonlight Walk, Jurassic Coast Challenge, KAPOW!, Strictly Ballroom, Great Dorset Cycle Challenge, and much beloved Summer Fete all fell to the Covid-19 pandemic, meaning a income shortfall of thousands of pounds.

Thank you to everyone who stepped up and put on their own fundraiser this year for Weldmar.  Here are just some of the inventive things you did for us:

Weymouth band The Leggomen broadcast a series of live gigs on Facebook

Melissa Twist from the Leweston School was one of a number of people who ‘braved the shave’!  Watch the video here:

Seven year old Daniel Jeram from Chickerell completed a Virtual Marathon for Weldmar by running lengths of his driveway!

The ladies of Weymouth Golf Club created and sold their very own ‘Calendar Girls’ style calendar:

After months of closure, SGM Hair in Dorchester raffled off the very first post-lockdown haircut, with all proceeds to Weldmar.

Nick Carroll cycled the height of Everest by pedalling up and down Verne Hill on Portland:

Shalims Balti House in Weymouth donated all of their proceeds from their ‘Give Back Sunday’ to Weldmar:

Nine year old Lily Tancock dressed up as Wonder Woman and used her daily exercise to walk the distance between her home in Burton Bradstock and our Inpatient Unit in Dorchester:

Lots of you raised money on your birthday by running a Facebook fundraiser:

A number of supporters braved a very rainy day to complete the Virtual London Marathon in early October:

Clairemarie Saunders from Weymouth created a calendar of sunrise photos she’s taken on her early morning bike rides, and sold them for Weldmar:

Ross Carrington from Chickerell raised money by putting on an amazing display of Christmas lights at his home:

Dave Cowley skydived for Weldmar!

Marc Graham cycled from Poole to Land’s End with his brother and friend:

85 year old Graham Curtis got sponsored to do laps on his mobility scooter:

Graham Curtis, MBE, from Dorchester.

…and Jo Thomson from Dorchester hosted a virtual danceathon on Facebook:

These are just a few of the amazing things done by our local community to raise funds for this this year. Thank you to everyone who did something to fundraise for Weldmar Hospicecare, or who sponsored or supported someone who did!

We look forward to your continuing support throughout 2021.
