Weymouth Golf Club’s ‘Calendar Girls’ are above par fundraisers for Weldmar

14th August 2020

The brave ladies of Weymouth Golf Club have dared to bare all for a ‘Calendar Girls’ style calendar, which will raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare.

Strategically placed golf carts, umbrellas, trees, and even cakes are used to preserve the modesty of the ladies taking part, with all twelve photos being taken at the club, which have been described as ‘fun and tasteful, with not too many close ups!’

“A group of us got together over a bottle of wine after a rehearsal for a social event last year”, says Ladies Captain Sharon Rand.  “We were discussing fundraising for my chosen charity for 2020 and coming up with all these mad ideas of what to do, and then someone joked about taking our clothes off for a calendar, just like the WI had done all those years ago!”

It was an idea that stuck, and so they decided to go for it, and raise money for Weldmar.

Sharon says, “We wanted to do it for Weldmar, as a number of us have had personal friends who have needed their services in the past twelve months.  Not only do they care for patients, but they also have amazing support for families, including bereavement counselling.  It’s such a fantastic place for the people of Dorset.”

One of the ladies called on a friend, local photographer Penny Piddock, who gave her time for free, and over the next few months they carefully choreographed the photographs, and it was kept so secret that many of their husbands knew nothing about it.

“It was an interesting experience!”, explains Sharon. “We had the Head Greenkeeper, Rob Bayliss, keeping watch for us.  There was quite a scramble to get out of one of the bunkers when a couple of male golfers were spotted walking nearby!  But it was great fun.  One of my favourite shots is of Jean and Jane, which is our May photo.  The look on their faces, as they hide behind the bushes, just really sums it all up.”

“All the ladies have been absolutely fantastic, but special thanks should be given to Elaine Rockingham, who co-ordinated the whole project.  She sorted out all the poses, and who would be in which month.”

The calendar has already been well supported, with a number of local businesses sponsoring a month each, and Advantage Print offering a special rate for producing the finished article.

Sharon can be seen, along with last year’s Ladies Captain, Sue, behind a large umbrella on April’s page in the calendar.

300 of the calendars have been printed, with more to be made if there is a demand.  They cost £8 each, and available from the office of Weymouth Golf Club on Links Road, or by calling 01305 750831 (choose option 5).

Our sincere thanks to Weymouth Golf Club for the continued support.  With fundraising events cancelled, we are facing a significant shortfall in our income, and we are looking to the local community to stand by us and help us stay resilient, now and in the future.
