Weldmar Hospicecare, together with local businesses and organisations, are working to offer residents and visitors a firework spectacular on Monday 21st August 2017.
Weymouth’s seafront will be full of colour and sound and promises to bring excited crowds on Monday 21st August for the display, which will start at 9.30pm on Weymouth Esplanade.
The display will be enhanced with Weldmar fundraising activities taking place during the day from 2pm, and into the evening, on the seafront.
The event is also being organised to celebrate the life of Mike Hunter, who was a patient of Weldmar’s, and who was responsible for setting off the Weymouth Fireworks during his time as a pyrotechnic operator at Pains Fireworks for over 20 years.
Sam Hunter is Mike’s daughter, and is a languages teacher at Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester.
Sam said “As a family, we had a discussion with Dad about how he wanted his ashes to be dealt with. We discussed where he really enjoyed being, and one of the things he loved doing was the fireworks in Weymouth. So he spoke to his company, to see if they would be able to support him to have his ashes scattered whilst a firework display was happening. And we are very grateful to them, as they have agreed – and have also promised that these fireworks will be the biggest and best that Weymouth has ever seen. His one little caveat was that we needed to make sure that we did some fundraising at the same time”.
A growing number of Weymouth and Portland businesses are working with Weldmar Hospicecare to host the fireworks whilst raising important funds for a local hospice.
Weldmar is keen to hear from any Dorset based business that would like to contribute to the big fireworks on Weymouth seafront. Please contact Emma Brown, Weldmar’s Business Development Fundraiser, on 01305 261800, or emma.brown@weld-hospice.org.uk, if you would like to be involved.
Emma said “It is important to stress Weldmar are the beneficiary and are not using any of our supporters monies to finance this event. This will be an opportunity to raise funds for the care of our patients whilst sustaining and developing this traditional summer event in Weymouth, and also paying a fitting tribute to Pains Firework employee Mike Hunter”.
