Write to your MP today, and encourage them to join the debate to secure the future of hospice care
30th August 2024
< BACK TO NEWSIn May this year, Weldmar Hospicecare revealed that we were expecting to spend around a million pounds more on providing end of life care this year than we expect to raise through fundraising and retail income.
Despite a brilliant response from the local community to Making Every Moment Matter campaign, like many other hospices across the UK we are still forecasting a significant deficit budget. The NHS contribution to our running costs now stands at just 17%, and we currently need to raise £27,500 every single day to provide our services to those who need them – people who are experiencing life’s most difficult of journeys.
Making sure hospice funding remains in the spotlight
The potential crisis in hospice funding was addressed in a parliamentary debate in April, when the-then West Dorset MP, Chris Loder, spoke in glowing terms of Weldmar, its care, and its people, based on his own personal experience. He then visited our Inpatient Unit in May and met with patients and staff.
With a new government in place, and every constituency in Weldmar’s service area electing new MPs, we need to ensure that the conversation continues, and that hospice funding remains on the agenda for the new government, and for the new Dorset based MPs.
Thanks to Hospice UK, writing to your MP is quick and easy
Hospice UK, the organisation that represents the sector, is asking people to write to their MP and speak up for their local hospice. On their website, they have a simple form that identifies your MP, and provides a template letter, to which you can add your own words if you wish.
Please stand up for Weldmar Hospicecare, and hospices across the UK.
Thank you.
