23. Emma Mills
Senior Sister Emma Mills has been a friendly face on the wards at the Inpatient Unit for the last 17 years. As a student nurse Emma had the opportunity to undertake a placement in a hospice and the experience really showed to her the difference that can be made to a person’s journey, and she knew that palliative care was an area she wanted to work in.
Weldmar Hospicecare has always been close to Emma’s heart, supporting family and friends over the years. She qualified as a Registered Nurse in 2005 and began working on an acute oncology unit. When Emma saw a vacancy advertised at Weldmar she jumped at the chance to apply and have the opportunity to work for such an amazing charity, joining the IPU in January 2007 as a Staff Nurse.
Emma feels really lucky to have been able to take on different roles and to be able to develop within her career, having been supported to undertake both a Palliative Care Degree and a Masters in Advanced Practice. The period of study for her Masters qualification allowed Emma to enhance her skills and knowledge within nurse leadership and helped her to transition into the Senior Sister role.
When Emma was asked for a stand out memory, she struggled to pick just one. “There have been so many times that our amazing team have come together to help a patient achieve what was important to them, parties, weddings organised in 24 hrs, movie nights etc. Lots of fun and laughter, making mini snowmen on the wall outside the single rooms for the patients unable to get outside.”
The last 17 years have flown by for Emma, she said “Weldmar for me is more than just a job, working with such an amazing team every day, making a difference, it’s a real privilege.”
