The Ladies of Weymouth Golf Club have raised in excess of £5,700 for Weldmar Hospicecare, after captain Sharon Rand nominated us as her Charity of the Year.

In a year where fundraising ideas needed some extra creativity due to restrictions around the pandemic, a ‘Calendar Girls’ style calendar proved to be a big hit, and they have also raised money selling handmade face masks, and held a plant sale.

“I’m totally astounded,” said Sharon, “especially after the Covid year and not being able to do the usual fundraising events we do.  The total is testament to the members here, and the support we’ve had throughout the year.

“The calendar had a massive response, and was sent across the country after featuring in a national golfing magazine.  It brought quite a lot of fun to what was a difficult time.”

Strategically placed golf carts, umbrellas, trees, and even cakes were used to preserve the modesty of the ladies, with local photographer Penny Piddock taking the pictures, and (now retired) Head Greenkeeper Rob Bayliss keeping watch!

Member Dilys Grant is one of a number of members of the club who made facemasks, initially in response to the shortage of PPE items available for frontline healthcare workers, including at Weldmar Hospicecare and Dorset County Hospital, and then went onto make them to sell and raise money.

“We’re still making around thirty masks a week and the money is still coming in,” explains Dilys, “and so far we’ve raised more than £1,000 for Weldmar doing this alone.  The fundraising has been a real team effort.  Everyone pitches in and is happy to get involved.”

Sharon nominated Weldmar as her Charity of the Year because a number of members of the club had benefitted from the charity’s bereavement services.
