‘Fashioning the Future’ – College student creates collection from Weldmar charity shop recycling

Molly Stone, a Level 3 Art and Design student at Weymouth College, has created an impressive catwalk collection transforming clothing and accessories, that would be unsuitable for sale, from Weldmar Hospicecare’s St Thomas Street charity shop recycling. Molly’s work is currently on display in the St Thomas Street charity shop window in Weymouth town centre.

Kim Short, Deputy Head of School at Weymouth College, said “Molly’s work delves into the captivating themes of totalitarianism, apocalyptic scenarios, and dystopia. Her work encapsulates the essence of control, limited freedoms, destruction, and chaos, creating thought-provoking and impactful pieces.”

“In line with her theme, Molly has experimented with various techniques, such as distressing and layering materials, resulting in visually striking and conceptually profound artwork. Moreover, she has explored the concept of an androgynous silhouette, adding another layer of depth to her artistic exploration.”

“Throughout her academic journey so far, Molly has exhibited a passion for sewing and textiles with a particular focus on the art of upcycling clothing. Inspired by renowned fashion designers like Vivienne Westwood and Rick Owens, who are celebrated for their distinct grunge gothic style and incorporation of reclaimed elements, Molly has skilfully integrated these influences into her final project.”

Laura Rawlins, St Thomas Street shop manager, is delighted to showcase Molly’s work at the shop, she said “Sustainability is something younger generations are passionate about and also fits with Weldmar’s own values, so it has been great to be able to work with Molly and help her with this project, both with supplying items from the recycling and as an exhibition space for the collection. The outfits she has created are great and eye-catching, and very different to our normal displays – they have already been a talking point from customers and passers-by.”
