“You feel like they’re genuinely pleased to see you there” – positive reaction from locals as Weldmar’s Swanage charity shop opens in a new location

After four months away from the town, Weldmar Hospicecare has opened their smart new charity shop in Swanage.

The charity’s previous site in the High Street closed in January, with work all ready to get underway on the new premises on King’s Road West, which used to be the Post Office.

The new look shop not only has more space and more choice of sustainable fashion, homewares and more, but also includes information about the specialist end of life care that Weldmar provides to adults in Dorset with a life limiting illness, so shoppers know exactly where the money they help raise is going.

One of the first shoppers through the door was Karen, who told us, “I think it’s so welcoming. Deana and the team are so lovely when you come in, and you get treated with a lot of respect. When you come in, you feel as though they are genuinely pleased to see you there. I love the new shop. The set up is beautiful and I wish everyone there all the love and luck in the world. I also really like the bit on the window that says ‘thank you’ to people coming in.”

Martha and her family spent time in the shop and left with dinosaur toys, a jigsaw and clothes for the children, trousers for her husband, and a new Gap jacket for herself. She says, “We’re very excited to come to the opening today. This new shop is much bigger than the last one, it’s really easy to find things here, and we’ve been able to try things on in the fitting room. We must have enjoyed it as we’ve come out with four bags full of stuff!”

Anne Moore has been volunteering with Weldmar for eighteen years, and says she really enjoys being part of the team. “I just love it. I feel like I’m doing some good for the community, good for myself, and love meeting the people that I work with. The new shop is amazing compared to what we had before. There’s so much space, and it’s so well laid out. It’s gorgeous.”

Ann Tiller, who cut the ribbon with Anne, says it was lovely to see the shop so busy on its first morning open. “I’ve been fundraising for Weldmar for about 32 years. I was there at the start when Joseph Weld helped set it all up, and later I came into the shop here as a volunteer. I enjoy doing it, meeting people in the shop, and having a chat. This new shop is going to be wonderful.”

The new Weldmar Hospicecare shop in Swanage is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Donations of quality, pre-loved items are welcome, and anyone interested in volunteering can pop in and speak to a member of the team.
