“The nursing from Weldmar has been exactly what Claire needs”: Claire and Nigel’s Story
24th June 2025
Claire, from Bridport, has a rare neurological condition called PSP – Progressive Supranuclear Palsy – and is being cared for at home by the team at Weldmar’s Specialist Hospice at Home West Dorset hub, which is based in the town.
Claire was referred to Weldmar by her consultant, something that her husband, Nigel, says ‘was a very sound decision’.
Nigel explains more about how Weldmar have made a significant difference:
“We have regular visits from the different disciplines at Weldmar, and what we find is that they really listen. They solve a lot of problems for us. They are also very good at liaising with the hospital, with our doctor, and also the district nurses to name just a few.
“They are friendly, they are respectful, and also very helpful. Even if there’s something they can’t deal with on the spot, they’ll come back and sort it out.”
“The nursing from Weldmar has been exactly what Claire needs. They’ve also been able to provide lots of equipment – you name it, and we’ve probably got it! They’ve also provided physiotherapy for Claire. They have coordinated services from other medical providers when that’s been needed.”
“We’re very fortunate in having Weldmar here. It gives us a certain soundness of mind that if we have a problem we haven’t already dealt with, we can call Weldmar, and either Lu (Weldmar Community Nurse Specialist based at our West Dorset hub) would come up, or she’d be able to send someone appropriate for the situation.
“It’s knowing that you’ve got an organisation that is there to come and help you when you need it. You can call them, they will listen, and give sound advice.”
