#HospiceCareWeek: How Weldmar provides the personal touches that matter to patients and loved ones
10th October 2022
At Weldmar we support patients and their loved ones throughout what can be one of life’s most difficult journeys. An important part of this is being able to let the patient lead their journey and allow us to help provide ‘what matters to them’. We are committed to providing what matters. This may be the catering team providing bespoke meals based on what the patient enjoys eating, ensuring patients can listen to their favourite music as they spend their last hours at home, allowing pets in the Inpatient Unit and providing family support to create special memories.
Weldmar at Home, launched last year, is a key example, as more patients tell us they would prefer to spend their last weeks and days in the comfort of their own home, and we are now able to provide care to allow this to happen.
Providing what matters
Below are just some of the stories where Weldmar team members provide some of those personal touches that really matter to our patients and their loved ones.
A favourite treat
“Granny loved pink lemonade. One of the nurses had been away for the weekend and seen it for sale, and had brought it back for her. She was also particular about her hair, it was always neatly permed and she’s always used a heated roller brush. Her hair had become flat being in the hospice, and so with the help of the nurses, they tilted the bed backwards so I could wash her hair in bed.”
“The staff were outstanding. They went well beyond what they were expected to do.”

Weldmar: providing what matters
Giving me back my love of food
“Back in January, I just couldn’t eat. I would try and force down a banana, and only manage half. I would walk into the kitchen, and then back out again. When I went into the hospice, they gave me little amounts of food to begin with. The chef would come and see me and say I could have anything I wanted. I gradually found myself eating more, and by the time I was due to go home, I was asking for large portions! On my last day, they made me heart shaped toast. They were absolutely great.”

Helping me make the most of the Glastonbury Festival
“It’s a huge thing really, to be able to go and not be limited to staying in one place. It gave me the freedom to follow my ears and discover new music, which is something we have always enjoyed. Watching Elbow late in the afternoon was amazing, and it got me quite emotional at the end.”
