“I want to embrace life” – support Maria’s Wingwalk for Weldmar
16th June 2023
Maria is currently in the care of Weldmar Hospicecare following the return of cancer. On Friday 23rd June 2023, she will be taking to the skies above Dorset by being strapped to the wings of a plane – all to raise money for Weldmar in the process!
Here’s Maria’s story:
Having beaten the cancer in 2021, in January this year I was informed the cancer had returned and I was referred to Weldmar Hospicecare. On Friday 23rd June, whilst I am still able to, I will be taking on the challenge of a wing-walk to raise money for this wonderful charity who have looked after me so well.
My Weldmar Community Nurse, Selina, sees me at home and has been a great listener and encourages me to continue to think positively and embrace what life I have.
I go to the board games club on a Friday afternoon at Weldmar’s Inpatient Unit in Dorchester, which is one of their Wellbeing Sessions. It’s nice to have company as I live on my own, and feels very reassuring. I can just walk in, I can go and sit in the lovely gardens, and it’s nice to think of it as a second home before it might become a necessity.

I thought that if I’m going to raise money for Weldmar, it needs to be something that challenges me. I’m not easily scared, but this will definitely test me! If I want people to donate, then I need to put some effort in too and make it worthwhile! I didn’t even know wing-walking was a thing until I saw a much older lady complete one on a television news report – and if she could do it, then so can I!
I think that many people know someone who has needed the services of Weldmar. They do such a wonderful job and in my own way, I would like to help them to continue doing what they do so well.
Thank you.
We’ll be following Maria on the day of her wing-walk to let you all know how she is getting on. To support Maria’s brave charity fundraiser for Weldmar, please consider making a donation on her JustGiving page.
