The roll out of new look Weldmar Hospicecare charity shops across Dorset has continued with the opening of an all improved Bridport store on East Street.

A lighter, brighter environment, a revised layout, and new fixtures and fittings means an improved experience for people wanting to shop or donate items.

The first visitors were queuing outside before the doors opened, including regular shopper Mary. She told us, “I think it looks absolutely fabulous. It now has a lovely changing room instead of just a curtain, and it looks very smart. It’s all for a good cause, and it’s great!”

Lesley was also among the first to take a look around, and managed to secure the Portmeirion plates that had been on display in the window. She said, “I think it’s fantastic. It’s a lot lighter, the till is in a better place, everything is displayed very well and professionally, and it’s a brilliant improvement.

The ribbon was cut by Sally Gordon, from Weldmar’s Bridport based community nursing team, and the team of volunteers joined staff, directors, and trustees of Weldmar for the official opening.

Manager Sue Sturt said the shop would continue to be as welcoming as it always has been: “We’ve got a brilliant team of staff and volunteers here. I started working Sue Cleal, our Deputy Manager, about fourteen years ago and most of the volunteers have been here even longer than that! It’s great to see so much community support for the shop, and it’s been lovely seeing both new and familiar faces today.”

Weldmar Hospicecare’s 22 charity shops collectively contribute around £1.5M to the charity’s coffers every year, and Bridport is the tenth site to be refurbished. The improvements also include improved messaging about the services offered to local people who have a life limiting illness. All shops that have been refurbished have seen their contributions to the charity rise as a result.
