Support for Carers
Our support extends beyond the patient in our care, and we have a dedicated Carer Support Coordinator who provides practical and emotional help and advice to those people who are providing caring duties for their loved ones with a life limiting illness.
It is extremely important for carers of patients with a life limiting illness to receive support. Carers often face a number of challenges, including:
- Physical and emotional demands: Carers may need to be available around the clock for their loved ones, which can be physically and emotionally draining. They may also have to deal with the patient’s pain and other symptoms, which can be difficult and upsetting.
- Changes to their own life: Carers may have to give up work or reduce their hours, and they may have less time for themselves and their other relationships. They may also feel isolated from their friends and community.
- Financial worries: Carers may incur additional costs as a result of caring, such as travel costs and medical supplies.
- Uncertainty about the future: Carers may be worried about how they will cope when the loved one dies, and they may also be concerned about their own health and well-being.

Our Carer Support Co-ordinator is Chloe Hook, and we have Carer Support Volunteers too.
The team will visit carers at home, or arrange meetings at our offices in Poundbury or Inpatient Unit. They can also catch up with those they are supporting on video calls and on the phone.
Carers are welcome to attend Weldmar’s Wellbeing Support Sessions. These are weekly sessions which can be attended by patients and bereaved relatives as well as carers, and include activities such as a choir, gardening club, pampering, board games, arts and crafts, and more, so you can engage in an activity that suits you. Wellbeing Support Sessions provide mutual support for those going through a similar journey, as well as professional support from our Patient and Family Support Services Team.
For the wellbeing of carers and patients, we have a new Self Care Hub, featuring some basic instructions on massage and reflexology, and advice for those suffering with anxiety, sleeplessness, and more. Visit the Self Care Hub.
