“Over the last few months, we have been working closely with patients to better understand what is important to them when receiving end of life care from Weldmar Hospicecare. It has been consistently clear that both specialist input and hands on care, in the comfort of their own home, is what patients value most.
“With more than 80% of the care we provide taking place at home, we are proposing to roll out a new ‘hospice at home’ model that blends our existing community nursing and Weldmar at Home services. This will ensure patients will receive the best and most appropriate level of care, when and where they need it. The proposal enables us to continue meeting the increased demand for our care, and the ability to support as many patients as possible, whilst also meeting the need for us to be financially sustainable so that we can continue providing care into the future.
“It is likely that a small number of colleagues may leave the organisation as a result of the proposed changes, however, we are working hard to ensure that as many staff as possible can transition to an alternative role within the charity.
“Provision of care at our Inpatient Unit in Dorchester is unaffected, but as we receive just 17% of our income from the NHS and rely heavily on charitable income, it is important that we continually review the most sustainable way of delivering our services, whilst still meeting the needs and wishes of each individual within our care.”
