Philanthropy and Major Gifts
Without the incredible kindness and generosity of our supporters, Weldmar Hospicecare would simply not exist.
Making a major personal donation or giving through your own Trust or Foundation can make an extraordinary difference, helping to make every minute count and improve the quality of life for our patients and their loved ones.
Weldmar Hospicecare’s Vision is that all people in Dorset living with a life limiting illness are able to access the palliative care services they need, when and where they need them.
With just 19% of our funds provided by the NHS, we need to raise more than £27,000 a day to run our wide range of day to day services, which benefit both patients and their loved ones facing one of life’s most difficult journeys. It is only through major gifts that we are able to fund important and ground breaking projects and plan for and protect our future.
Thank you
We extremely grateful to those who have already made fundamental projects possible. From the construction of our purpose-built hospice thirty years ago, through to the recent opening of our new family room and refurbishment of our Inpatient Unit.
More about Marion's Room and refurbishmentSupporters give large donations for many reasons, and we love to hear the stories that have inspired them to give so generously. We place immense importance on our partnerships with our philanthropists and are keen to ensure they support us in a way that is most meaningful to them.
How your support can help
There are lots of different ways that Weldmar Hospicecare cares for local people with a life limiting illness, and their loved ones. It’s not just about our hospice building – in fact, 83% of our care takes place in the homes and local communities of our patients.
It is for you to decide which area of our vital work you would like to support.
Specialist Hospice at Home
A patient’s first contact with Weldmar Hospicecare will normally be with their locally based Specialist Hospice at Home hub. We have hubs in the north, south, and west of Dorset, serving the communities in towns, villages, and hamlets around them.
Each team comprises of a Weldmar Community Nurse Specialist, Weldmar Community Nurses, Assistant Practitioners, and Health Care Assistants, providing care and support in the comfort of patients’ own homes, or in care homes or community hospitals, throughout their journey with us. They can refer patients and their loved ones into other Weldmar services, and liaise directly with other health professionals such as GPs.
Inpatient Unit
Based in Dorchester and provides a bright, warm, welcoming environment to patients who require both symptom control and end of life care. Our doors are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing specialist care tailored to each individual, delivered with comfort, dignity and respect.
Patient and Family Support Services
Specialist emotional and pre and post bereavement support for whole families including children. This includes our Wellbeing Support Sessions, providing patients, carers, and bereaved individuals with mutual support, engaging activities, and social interaction by attending themed sessions such as coffee mornings, arts and crafts, and pamper and relaxation.
Further Specialist Support and Therapies
We have a dedicated team of Allied Health Professionals offering physiotherapy and occupational therapy to patients that need our support. Our aim to to help patients stay independent and mobile for as long as possible, and able to make the most of every day. We also have a team of complementary therapists who offer a range of treatments to enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of those in our care.
Specialist Neurological Care
Weldmar is proud to co-ordinate and host a regional Motor Neurone Disease clinic, and has a dedicated MND Nurse.
Palliative Care Education and Research
We are engaged in national ground breaking palliative care research and developments, and provide an educational support programme for healthcare professionals and agencies throughout Dorset.
We have a number of personal stories about our care, and here are some recent examples:
