Weymouth College students turn Weldmar charity shop recycling into spectacular Steampunk creations
6th December 2024
Students studying on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice at Weymouth College have been busy creating fantastical steampunk fashion and accessories from sustainable sources as part of their latest project. The students have incorporated clothing and fabrics, that would be unsuitable for sale, from Weldmar Hospicecare’s Lodmoor charity shop recycling.
The students were set the brief by Weymouth BID to design and create props, accessories and costumes to be displayed at the Steampunk Weekend at Nothe Fort. Kim Short, Deputy Head of School at Weymouth College, said “Embracing the increasing focus on environmental sustainability within the creative industries became a guiding principle for this project. Students sourced materials thoughtfully incorporating recycled fabrics to reduce waste and reimagine discarded textiles into striking designs. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Weldmar Hospicecare charity shop at Lodmoor Hill for their generous support in granting students access to their fabric recycling resources.”
The students’ creations will be on display at the Steampunk Christmas Market – Saturday 7th December 10-4 and Sunday 8th December 11-3 at Nothe Fort in Weymouth.
