A fresh chapter as Weldmar’s Dorchester Bookshop unveils stunning new look

20th February 2026

Weldmar Hospicecare

The pages have turned on an exciting new era for one of Dorchester’s favourite literary haunts. After a short period of transformation, we’re thrilled to announce the official relaunch of our charity bookshop, sporting a refreshed and inviting new look for book-lovers!

A warm welcome

Despite the grey skies outside, the atmosphere was buzzing, with a queue of customers forming eager to explore the redesigned space.

The honours were performed by Weldmar Community Nurse Lucy Moxam, who cut the ribbon to officially declare the shop open. Joining the bookshop team of staff and volunteers for the celebrations were Weldmar Hospicecare CEO Caroline Hamblett and members of the Board of Trustees, who all noted the striking difference the renovations have made.

What’s new on the shelves?

It was important to the retail team to create a space that balances a vast book selection with a comfortable experience and whether you’re a lifelong bibliophile or a casual browser, there’s lots in store for you!

We’ve increased our shelf space to bring even more browsable titles to the shop floor, while also opening up the floor plan to ensure the shop feels spacious and accessible. New lighting has been installed throughout, making it easier than ever to read the spines of your next favourite read, and with updated flooring and heating system, it’s the perfect sanctuary to escape a chilly Dorset for an hour or so.

In an exciting new twist, we’ve also made use of an alcove by installing a dedicated vinyl booth. You can now listen to records before you buy them, really adding to the bookshop experience.

“This shop is about selling kindly donated books and music to raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare.” says Rob Mutter, Bookshop Manager. “And it’s also about providing a space for the community where people feel warm, welcome, and creatively inspired. We’ve had customers of all ages visit us this morning making purchases based on cover artwork, nostalgia, and local interest with lots of Thomas Hardy flying off the shelves! One little boy chose a book from our children’s section, and was so excited he immediately wanted to send a photo to his nan- that’s what it’s all about!”

Shopping with purpose

Every book, game, record or greetings card you purchase directly supports Weldmar Hospicecare, ensuring we can continue providing specialist care to patients with a life limiting illness and support for their families across Dorset.

We invite you to come and take a look around and get lost in the possibilities of our shelves. We can’t wait to see you there!
