Meet our Directors and Trustees

We are governed by a Board of Trustees headed by Stephen Baynard and supported by a Forum of Advisors. The Care Quality Commission regulates our services and the Charity Commission and Companies House regulate our business.

Chief Executive Officer

Ms Caroline Hamblett – LLB, FCIPD

Caroline Hamblett joined Weldmar in January 2016. She has had a varied career, initially as a police officer, before moving into the commercial sector with the Hanson Trust and Nestle. Caroline had a long and successful career in Marie Curie Cancer Care in all areas, including HR, operations, retail and service delivery. She holds a law degree, a legal practice certificate and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Caroline has two teenage boys who are rugby mad and a beautiful cockapoo dog. When not standing on the sidelines of windswept rugby pitches, Caroline enjoys yoga.

Caroline Sweetland – RN, PGCE, NMP, MSc – Registered Manager

Caroline qualified as a Registered Nurse at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1987 and since then has spent most of her career in palliative care having a passion for making a difference to those at the end of their lives.

She held a variety of roles in Royal Trinity Hospice and St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, as a palliative care nurse specialist in Cornwall and at Musgrove Park Hospital and St Margaret’s Hospice in Somerset before coming to work at Weldmar in January 2010.

Caroline is also a trained teacher and enjoys the opportunity of developing the knowledge and skills of all those involved in care and has a strong belief in the role of the multi-disciplinary team.
She became Director of Nursing at Weldmar in January 2018 and is the Accountable Officer for the charity.

Matt Smith

Matt joined Weldmar Hospicecare in November 2006 after previously supporting the charity for many years in a voluntary capacity.

He has delivered several roles since working for Weldmar with event management and income generation being his specific background. Matt has an understanding of all aspects of fundraising including community, events, challenges and individual giving. With in-depth and hands-on knowledge and experience of Weldmar’s services, he is responsible for all fundraising, marketing, communication and PR functions within the organisation as well as patient and family support services, hotel services and maintenance.

Matt lives in Dorset with his wife, is a trained chef and has been located in the county since he was born. Both Matt and his family have a personal connection to Weldmar and are committed to supporting a charity that is so close to many people’s hearts.

Director of Retail

Gavin Anderson-Terry

Gavin joined Weldmar Hospicecare in June 2015 having supported the charity at events and fundraisers.

Having grown up in the Midlands he relocated to Cornwall in 1988 where he first started in retail becoming a Store Manager for a national footwear chain. Over the years Gavin has held various roles with large national retail organisations such as Tesco, Lidl, Iceland, Shoe Zone and Stead and Simpson. Having previously lived in Dorset Gavin relocated back to the county in 2010 with his family.

A keen sportsman in his younger days Gavin still enjoys going to watch both football and rugby games, when he is not spending time with his wife or two teenage daughters.

David Healey

Director of Finance

David Healey FCCA

David joined Weldmar Hospicecare in June 2022. He has had a varied career as finance director in both public and private sector organisations including the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory, the UK Hydrographic office and Strode College. In addition to finance, David has also led various corporate functions, including at one stage a theatre, and has had several commercial roles working on bids ranging from £5m to £5bn in value.

David has spent most of his life in the south west, in Dorset and now just over the Dorset border in Somerset. David lives with his wife, his children who have returned home after Uni, and their dog. When time permits, he can be found cycling or tinkering in his workshop.

Stephen Baynard

Mr Stephen Baynard – FCMA CGMA (Chair)

Mr Baynard joined Weldmar Hospicecare in 2010 and was appointed Chairman in November 2014. He has had a very distinguished and successful career in Corporate Finance principally in the travel industry and has held posts including Worldwide Finance Director of ‘Thomas Cook’ and CEO of the major travel retailer ‘Going Places’ with over 750 retail stores.

He has particularly helped Weldmar in the development of the Retail and Fundraising arms which fund most of its activities.

He is a keen sportsman and has a love of Oriental antiques. He has four adult children and lives with his wife and Rhodesian Ridgeback in Burleston, five miles outside of Dorchester.

Mark Addison (Vice-Chair of Trustees)

Mark was until recently chairman at Dorset County Hospital. His Career was in the Civil Service and since 2006 he has held a variety of non-executive roles, including being on the Board of Which? and the National Archives.

He has chaired the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and has been a Civil Service Commissioner, a Public Appointments Assessor and a member of ACOBA. He has completed a number of reviews of governance arrangements in the public sector.

He joined the Board in 2023 and is also a member of the Audit Committee.

Sue Hawkett

Sue Hawkett OBE

Sue has worked in senior clinical, educational and managerial roles at local and national level, including the NHS, voluntary sector, overseas development agencies and latterly government.

As leader of the End of Life Care Team at the Department of Health she oversaw the publication of the End of Life Care Strategy.

She is currently a Lay Member on the NICE Quality Standards Committee for End of Life Care Service Delivery guidance.

James Joicey-Cecil

James Joicey-Cecil

Jamie, a qualified Chartered Accountant, enjoyed a distinguished career in the City of London working as an institutional stockbroker. 

He became a Trustee in 2008 and is currently Weldmar Hospicecare’s Hon. Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance and Investment & Property Committees. He also sits on the Audit and Income Generation Committees.

Jamie has lived in Dorset for over 40 years and his mother was brought up in the county. He is also involved with several other Dorset charities.

Davina Smith

Davina Smith

In her professional career Davina trained as a nurse and health visitor and had an extensive career in management within the NHS.

Once retired she served as a trustee of a hospice in Hertfordshire before moving to Swanage where she has busied herself serving on various health committees in a voluntary capacity.

David French

David French

David has lived in Dorset for over 20 years.

Prior to retirement he was a Director of Hall and Woodhouse with responsibility for the Beer business. He has extensive marketing and general management experience.

Since retiring he has become a business mentor and Governor or Trustee for local organisations.

Peter Lovibond

Peter Lovibond

Peter has retired after a career in investment banking, most recently as head of corporate equity derivatives at Commerzbank in London.

Having previously been a Trustee of a hospice in Surrey, Peter moved to Swanage and joined the Board of a Dorset mental health charity before becoming a Trustee of Weldmar.

Tanya Grant

Tanya is Bursar at Bramley School, an Independent Girls School and is also member of a subcommittee of the Governing Body at Milton Abbey School.

Previously her background was in the Telecare, Social Care and Housing sphere for 20+ years, where she led the growth of Magna Careline Limited to provide support to more than 28,000 vulnerable customers across the UK.

Tanya is also a previous Non-Executive Director of the TSA (formerly known as the Telecare Services Association).

Viscount FitzHarris

Viscount FitzHarris has extensive experience in financial management.

He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London.

He is now a local landowner and farmer.

Vicki Havercroft Dixon headshot

Vicki Havercroft Dixon

Vicki has worked as a nurse for nearly 30 years, her roles have included being the Senior Matron at a large Hospice in Hampshire.

Vicki is passionate about palliative and end of life care knowing that we only have one chance to get it right and wants to help us make a difference to the people of Dorset.

Vicki has recently completed a Florence Nightingale Foundation Leadership Scholarship and is currently working as the Lead Nurse for Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, supporting and influencing cancer nursing teams across the counties.

Directors and Trustees

Jonathan de Kretser

Until recently Jonathan worked as a GP and GP trainer in Weymouth for many years.

He has a complimentary role as a “permanent deacon” within the Church.

Originally from Hertfordshire he studied medicine at University College Hospital and after qualifying worked for a year in Queensland.

Jonathan joined the Board in 2023 and is also a member of the Clinical Governance Committee
