It may have been the hottest day of the year, but thousands of visitors flocked to Weldmar’s 26th annual Summer Fete on Saturday 9th September.

Temperatures of almost thirty degrees didn’t deter local people from attending the event, and enjoying the stalls, games, and entertainment, as well as seeing long term supporter Martin Clunes.

The Doc Martin star brought along his dog, Bob Jackson, and went around the fete meeting visitors, staff, and volunteers, and posing for countless photos before heading into the Inpatient Unit building to meet patients and their loved ones.

He said, “The fete is always lovely. I have been coming for 20 or something years and its always great. I like meeting all the volunteers and thanking them for all they do, and people come up to me and tell me about their loved ones who were cared for here. I think we’re all very proud of Weldmar in Dorset.”

Attractions included the famous Nurses’ Stall, with staff from our Inpatient and Community nursing teams, the chance to have a treatment from our Complementary Therapy experts, our Patient and Family Support Services team ran various activities, and the catering team ran a very popular barbecue and bar. Despite the heat, a number of visitors also went away with packs of Christmas cards from our retail marquee!

Fiona Hansford, Fundraising Lead, says, “Although it was very hot, it was a terrific day with a lovely atmosphere. Thank you to everyone who came along and generously supported the event, because every penny raised will be going towards the specialist care that we provide to people in Dorset who have a life limiting illness, and support for their loved ones.

“We couldn’t do it without the help and support of so many volunteers and staff who gave their time to marshall, run stalls, serve tea and cake, and so much more. Thank you also to all of the organisations and individuals  who came to show off animals or perform on the entertainment field, and helped make the day the success it was. Our thanks also go to First Bus for providing our free shuttle service from the town centre, and of course to HSBC UK for sponsoring the event – it was lovely to see some of their team here today too.

“Although primarily a fundraising event for Weldmar, the Fete holds a special place in the hearts of many of our visitors, as it will often be the first time they come back and see some of the team who looked after their loved ones during such a difficult time.”
