Weldmar Hospicecare’s Weldmar at Home service is set to care for more people across Dorset who are in the last weeks of life and want to die in the comfort of their own home.

The service was initially set up in July 2021 to meet the growing demand of people who were choosing to spend their last weeks and days in their own familiar surroundings, providing specialist hands on care for the patient and support and advice for loved ones.

So far, the majority of people using Weldmar at Home have been patients already under the care of the charity, but from this September the service is set to expand, accepting referrals from other healthcare providers and allowing even more patients to benefit from Weldmar at Home’s expertise.

Moving forward

People should be offered the choice of dying at home. Weldmar are partnering with NHS Dorset to provide care for people in the last few weeks of life. This includes people in hospital who need the care in place before they can be discharged. Additionally, those at home whose condition is deteriorating rapidly.

Mary Brice, Weldmar at Home Team Leader, says, “This team at Weldmar have been amazing. Coming into what was a new and evolving service just last year, and never losing sight of the objective of providing the highest standard of care in the home. The feedback we’ve had from families tells us we’re doing it right. Now we will be able to provide more care to those who need it most, giving patients the dignity of spending their last days where they want to be instead of a hospital ward.”

Funding will be provided to Weldmar from the NHS Dorset Integrated Care Board for these additional patients. The charity will continue to provide free, specialist end of life care for adults in Dorset with a terminal illness, and use charitable funds to continue their work. We need to raise more than £18,000 every day to fund this care for patients and loved ones, from doctors, nurses, therapists, counsellors, and more.
