Creative Therapy at Day Services in Bridport – Wet Felting
24th February 2022
Weldmar’s Day Services patients in Bridport have been learning the art of wet felting, and the results have been amazing!
Creative Therapist Debbie Elsmore explains what wet felting is. “It is a process of making a fabric using sheep’s wool, soapy water and the friction of your hands. The movement of your hands, usually over a layer of bubble wrap, with the soap and water causes agitation to the wool and the fibres become matted and tangled to create a solid bit of fabric.”
“Our patients layered Merino and Corriedale wool in beautiful tones, and this is the part of the process where you are building your picture – it’s like painting a picture but with wool.”
Ian, whose picture was entitled ‘A View From My Room’, was thrilled with the outcome of his creation of the iconic Colmer’s Hill near Bridport. “My family loved it and couldn’t believe I had made it with wool!”
Creative Therapy is an important part of what happens at Day Services. Debbie says, “It’s lovely to have something at the end of it, but the process is so important, where the patient can lose themselves in it and relax and chat away. The things that are talked about are amazing.”
Day Services Lead, Jenny Wood:
When I walk past the craft table, Deb can be facilitating some emotional conversations - they are not there just painting boxes. Sometimes, what is being said is really emotive and emotional, and there's quite a lot skill involved in managing that space.
