Susanna’s Apprenticeship Story: “It’s been really fun and the apprenticeship has really helped”

You may have seen Susanna if you have popped into our Dorchester Clearance Outlet on the Poundbury West Industrial Estate. She has been part of the Weldmar retail team for six years, starting as a part-time Sales Assistant, before progressing to being a full-time Deputy Manager. “I knew of Weldmar and thought it would be nice to work for a charity and
the benefits were good.”
About 18 months ago, Susanna had the opportunity to progress her skills and career further by enrolling on the Level 3 Retail Team Leadership apprenticeship through Yeovil College. “It’s been really fun and the apprenticeship has really helped. You learn all about the background of retail, what we do every day and why we do it.” The apprenticeship culminated with an exam, professional discussion and project, Susanna was recently awarded with a distinction, a fantastic achievement.
Whilst completing the apprenticeship Susanna temporarily managed shops in Weymouth and Sherborne, before returning to the Dorchester Clearance Outlet, full-time. “I think my confidence has grown, and people have commented that I’ve got more confident since I’ve completed my apprenticeship. I’ve always been a quiet person, but definitely working in retail has brought me out of my shell.”
“There is hard work but it’s also fun. You don’t know what you’re going to get through the door and what each day is going to entail, it’s different every day.”
